A student monk asked Zhaozhou: “Does a doggy still have buddha-nature?”

Zhaozhou said: “Yes.”

The student monk asked: “Since the doggy has buddha-nature, why did it then crash into this skin-bag?”

Zhaozhou said: “Because he clearly knows yet deliberately transgress.”

又有学僧问："狗子还有佛性吗？"赵州："无。"学僧："上至诸佛，下至蝼蚁，皆有佛性，狗子为什么没有佛性"赵州："为伊有业识性在。"

Another student monk asked Zhaozhou: “Does a doggy still have buddha-nature?”

Zhaozhou said: “No.”

The student monk asked: “Up from the various buddhas, down to the many ants, they all have buddha-nature, why does doggy have no buddha-nature?”

Zhaozhou said: “Because it/he has karmic consciousness present.”
